Job Search and that magic ingredient – confidence!

Now first I have to admit to having an interest here. As a career coach I focus on working with clients who want to develop their confidence and self esteem – that is my “niche.” But I chose it for very good reasons. I would say that being able to maintain self confidence in the job search process is, as in the rest of life, key to success. You need to believe in yourself and your capabilities.

Of course you need to meet the requirements of the role for which you are applying, but also, you need to maintain self-belief through the anxiety ridden process that is recruitment. And that is not always easy! You have to have the confidence to present what you believe about yourself to strangers and that can be challenging.

Presenting yourself when you are already in a role at which you are succeeding, is quite different to doing it when something has gone wrong at work or if you have been made redundant. When you are simply looking for a career development move or a promotion then you have all the confidence you have built up in your present role to support you. You may be a little nervous or suffer from a little performance anxiety (stage-fright to you and me). But basically you can tell yourself with some degree of conviction that if you succeed they will be lucky to get you and, if you don’t, well it is their loss and you will do better next time.

When you are already unemployed and having to deal with a market that is more likely to reject than accept you, you need to build up your resistance. You need the confidence to keep going until you get that precious job.

Fundamental to maintaining confidence is physical and mental fitness. Do you eat a good diet? Do you exercise? I know it is tempting to comfort eat – and you need get out there and move. At the very least take a walk each day. It is all too easy to get up and just slope into the home office interrupted only with visits to the kitchen to snack or to the sitting room to watch day time television. I know – I work at home. As well as that, take time out for meditation or at the very least relaxation time.

Most important, you need to develop of very strong vision of yourself as a successful professional with lots to give. Create an image in your mind of you doing well. For these purposes, suspend judgment about any doubts. Then spend time each day with that vision of yourself. Some people imagine their successful self standing right in front of them and they step into the vision, beginning to see the world through their successful self’s eyes.

The more time you spend with your successful self, the more that self becomes you. This helps a lot when you are preparing for an interview and again if you are unlucky enough to be rejected – remember it is their loss and you will do better next time.

Why is looking confident important?

If you want people to have confidence in you, as well as being good at what you do, you need to look confident. Yes, I know that is a little unfair – surely being good should be enough?  Sadly in the real world, that is rare!
So, do you look confident?
If I met you for the first time, what would I see and what would I hear?  What would your body language tell me?  Would I want to get to know you better? Would I have confidence in your ability to do that job I might have available. Or, would I buy that product or service from you?
The need for confidence goes beyond work, of course. People like others who are confident as friends and potential partners.
When it comes to appearing confident, remember that over 70% of our communication is transmitted by our body language. So, while you are working to increase your  confidence, how do you change your body language to make you look confident?  Here are some tips to help:

Six Tips To Help You Look Confident

      1. Start with your feet.  Stand with them at least 12 inches apart and have your weight distributed evenly between them. Plant the soles of your feet firmly and evenly on the ground – let them give a firm support to the rest of your body. Now, you are rooted but not rooted to the spot! But don’t lock your knees – instead keep them soft and very slightly flexed.
      2. Let you spine be proud. Your spine protects and supports your internal organs! Feel your spine lifting you to the sky – that is what it is there for!  Lift your upper body out of your pelvis and stand upright.  Feel yourself “lengthening your spine” – stand proud!  Try thinking of a piece of string attached to the top of your head gently pulling upwards. But don’t stand rigidly – you are not a soldier on parade.
      3. Keep your shoulders relaxed. Let them drop – don’t lift them high. The shoulders and neck often show how tense we are – let yours relax.
      4. Let your shoulders widen rather than pull back. Open your chest up so that you can breathe freely.  That in itself will make you feel more relaxed.
      5. Smile.  Work on learning to smile naturally at home.   Practice some affirmations giving yourself some positive messages, for example; “relax and smile”, “calm and smile”, “wonderful people make me smile”.  Bring that smile to your eyes and let it broaden to fill your whole body and mind. Practice feeling how it feels.  Now when you meet other people say quietly to your self – “these are the wonderful people who make me smile”.  Now find yourself smiling.
      6. Change your focus.  When we go into a new situation if we lack confidence, we tend to focus on ourselves and how we feel.  You can deliberately change your focus to the people about you. Start to be interested in them rather than how you are feeling. You will look approachable and look more confident.

Refresh Your Job Search In 2013

Have you been searching for a new job for a while now?  Hard isn’t it to keep up that energy?  But there will be new and exciting opportunities in 2013, if you can re-energize your quest. Here are some tips to help you refresh your job search.

Update your image and your attitude.

What would really give your confidence a boost?  How about a new hairstyle or should you considering a new style of dress?  What kind of change could you make as an out ward sign that something is different in 2013? You could make a change to represent the new you and your new approach.

Work hard on your commitment to positive thinking and your self-belief.  If you catch yourself thinking negatively, stop in your tracks, catch that thought and flip it over in mind. Think of yourself as not so much looking for a job as looking for an opportunity to add value. You know that given the right opportunity, that is exactly what you will do. Think every day about the benefits that you will bring to your new employer.

Revamp Your CV/Résumé

An important step in every job search is to equip yourself with a CV that really sells you, your skills and your abilities. Consider new options

Maybe now is a time to think about quite radical new options.  Changing careers isn’t easy. But nor is it as hard as you might imagine. I’ve done it four times in my life successfully. I’ve enjoyed the different careers at the time and I really was successful in each one. For me, there came a time to consider new options. Changing in this way has allowed me to come to terms with a changing economic environment and each new direction has built upon the experience and knowledge gained in the last one. Change as the Prelude to Growth and Your Expectations

If you are planning to make some personal changes, take a closer look at what you are expecting and how you plan to make the change. According to researchers Polivy and Herman (2002), there are some common kinds of unrealistic expectations that might set you up for failure when you try to change. They are usually in the following areas:

  • How much change: People often think they are capable of changing far more than they really can, as a result, they reject more modest and achievable goals. If you do have to make a large change, break it down into a series of smaller changes for more chance of success.
  • How quickly and easily you can change: People are often too optimistic about how long it is going to take and how hard it may be!  Try to be very realistic in your planning and think about obstacles and risks, and how you will overcome them
  • Effects of change on other parts of your life: People often overestimate how much they can improve their lives with just one kind of change.  And people often miss out because they don’t realize that you can learn a lot from the process of change and enjoy parts of the change.  You can then apply the learning to other changes you need to make.

If you can take these points on board and avoid unrealistic expectations, you give yourself a better chance at success. So, go forward with hope. Go ahead and believe in yourself and your plans for change. Reaffirm that you have the motivation and perseverance to achieve your goals. Remind yourself of all the benefits you will be able to enjoy. But, above all, be realistic in your expectations. This will help you to be patient with yourself when things are going slowly and encourage you when thing don’t go as smoothly as you first thought. With positive, but realistic, self-belief and realistic plans,  you really can become the person you want to be.

Confident Leadership – for various reasons which I won’t go into here, I’ve been reading a lot recently about military leadership and the training of military leaders. A key component in military leadership training is the development of confidence – you need to believe in your own competence and vision, if you are to inspire others to follow you.

Now, as a coach, I often work with people who want to develop their confidence. We work together on how they think about themselves and relate to the people they engage with. I teach them techniques to help them develop the competencies they need to have confidence.

The common themes in my approach to helping people develop confidence and how the military does it is, I think, achievement and practice. I encourage people to learn how to move out of their comfort zones, usually in small steps to begin with and then moving up to larger ones. For some people, smiling at a stranger has much in common with overcoming a hurdle on an assault course. The feeling of fear and then knowing how to manage that fear is common to both. The trick is then to repeat the exercise until your comfort zone extends to embrace it – you know you can do it. And those nervous thoughts rarely enter your head.  If they do you, know you can manage them. You take pride in the achievement and, with that, comes confidence.

So if you want to be a good leader, work on your confidence – develop your confident leadership abilities. Take a deep breath and begin to take steps outside your own comfort zone. Find that one small step each day and take it, then take it again. Monitor how it feels before and after – now, you know you can do it. Keep practising. Take pride in your achievements – can’t you feel that confidence grow!

What is the formula for confidence in interviews, meetings or those big occasions?

Confidence in interviews etc- recently we had a great guest post from Mary Hope on The Benefits Of Good Career Management. Mary has over 30 years of experience in business, teaching, HR, headhunting and coaching.  She believes passionately that people need to understand their own drivers and needs to find fulfilling careers. Today she shares with us her thoughts on how confidence destroys performance at interview and provides a solution.

What is the formula for confidence in interviews, meetings or those big occasions?

You can find lots of help and information about how to build your confidence for an interview. Usually these talk about preparation, rehearsing and looking the part. I give all that advice. But what if that is not enough. What if you know you have done all those things but you still feel a complete bag of nerves? What if you know that you will turn up at the interview shaking? If you know that you will get tongue-tied and worry that you might just dry up? What if you are really anxious that you won’t be able to think of anything to say? OR are you one of those people who just feels ‘I’m no good at interviews’? Who feels that, interviewers will ‘catch you out’ ‘spot that you are not really that good’, put you on the spot. MAYBE you are someone who hates talking about themselves and just feels shy and exposed.

Even if you have confidence in your own abilities to do a job it may not be enough to get you to feel confident in an interview.

And lack of confidence is a major issue in interviews because it clouds the way the interviewers see you.  Interviewers find it really hard to believe that you can do a job confidently if they see you shaking in an interview.

And feeling nervous about the interview will impact on you ability to answer the questions. Nervousness is like static on the line, your brain starts to pay attention to the static and the crackling and stops paying attention to formulating the answers. You tense up and your mouth dries up and you become so self-conscious you dry up. Literally your nerves stop you being able to perform.

If you have had bad experiences in the past they flood back to you and you re-experience failure. Sometimes the bad experiences and fear of failure means that you can’t even do the preparation required.

So how can you overcome this? Well you need to do all the really practical things suggested above and then you need to visualise yourself doing well in the interview. If you are nervous, that can be hard so with my clients I use a relaxation a creative visualisation technique. We literally run through all the things that you need to do perform well and then as I relax them and talk them through an imaginary interview where everything goes really well and they feel really confident. And it works. Clients report a sense of feeling more relaxed and going into their interviews feeling more confident. So imagine your way to success! These techniques work just as well at any nerve-wracking encounter.. big meeting, presentation  whatever.
