Remuneration Package – now being the very ethical career coach that I am I do not give financial advice – I am not competent to do so! But clients do ask me about negotiating reward packages. And I have had clients who have lost out because they have not spent enough time thinking about what salary to ask for.
If you have been out of work for sometime, asking for what you were paid in your last paid role may not be the best strategy.
I usually suggest people work out what they are spending now and then how much they need to meet all their current obligations. That includes their obligations to themselves and those they love to keep fit, stay healthy and have some entertainment.
I ask them to check each item to decide whether it really is a “must have” or is it a “would like it”!
Now, they know their baseline requirement.
The next step is to find out what people in the line of work they wish to do, at the same level, are being paid now. You’d be surprised to find how many really are being paid less than a year ago.
Now you have some idea of the range to think about and you need to work on how to make yourself attractive for the potential employer. It is great if you are going to be in the kind of work where you can show that your activities will be covering your salary cost. For most of us it isn’t like that.
You may have to accept that to get work now, you will be earning less than before. You might even have to accept a step down in the pecking order. But if you are as good as you think you are, hopefully, you will soon be back to the level you aspire to!
Remember to take benefits into account in making your decision – people moving out of the public sector don’t always think about that.
